Manzoni Vineyards, Carmel-by-the-Sea
Manzoni Vineyards is a boutique winery that originated as a sideline in 1990, when six acres of land turned out to be unusable for cultivating produce. Those acres became home to vine rootstock, handcrafted and offered in small production. Only 2,000 cases of wine are produced here yearly and all of them are gold-medal winners. The seven-year-old tasting room offers four wines ($10); make sure to sip the 2011 Home Vineyard Pinot Noir, in which cherry and red-berry fruit characters dominate the nose and Burgundian nuances of vanilla and hard spices round out things.
