Mara Hoffman

The fashion designer on her morning rituals and otherworldly dreamscapes.

Highly subjective takes on life's most interesting experiences.

What’s your most treasured personal ritual?

It would have to be meditation first thing in the morning. I have been doing it for years and I can feel a very clear difference when I do not; my whole day is different without it. Even if I oversleep or need to get somewhere early and can’t get the full 20 minutes in, I will still sit for 10 or even just 5 minutes because it makes my day better, and I’ll feel better. I am also in the routine of a large glass of warm lemon water right before the meditation. It’s like a mini cleanse that hydrates me and shifts my energy into awake mode.

The most dramatic sunsets and sunrises?

The best sunsets that I have experienced are in Nosara, Costa Rica. Dreamscape, otherworldly, holy moly. These sunsets remind me of Luke Skywalker’s home planet, Tatooine. There is a pink sheet that covers the sky, and on some evenings both the sun and the moon are across from one another, as if to meet one another for a shared moment. I can only say that it reminds me of the extreme beauty and wonderment of this planet. It fills me with humility and immense gratitude.
