Highly subjective takes on life’s most interesting experiences.

What’s the most memorable ritual you’ve ever experienced?

When I was studying in Maharashtra, India, my teacher graciously invited me to a traditional Yajna (fire) ceremony led by Brahmins (Hindu priests). We sat for nearly 12 hours chanting sacred texts in front of a blazing fire pit and ornate altar bobbing in and out of the ever-elusive state of meditation. I don’t know if I’ve ever experienced as much serenity and discomfort simultaneously, and haven’t stopped chasing that sobering balance between effort and grace ever since.

Favorite word or phrase in a language not your own?

Tsundoku. A Japanese word for the act of letting new books pile up without reading them.

The most beautiful restaurant experience?

Easy: Blue Hill at Stone Barns. I admittedly went into the evening a little skeptical like, “Is this really going to live up to the hype and be worth the $$$?” But it did! And then some. The vegetables stole the show and each course was more theatrical than the last.
