The London Edition (rooms, from $430; 10 Berners St.; 44-20/7781-0000; edition-hotels.marriott.com) is an example of Ian Schrager all grown up (finally!). There’s a buzzy lobby-restaurant-bar scene with no attitude (as in no arrogant door policies and an impeccably trained front-desk staff). The Rosewood London (pictured, rooms, from $590; 252 High Holborn; 44-20/7781-8888; rosewoodhotels.com) makes the case for the superbrand with soul. Rosewood spent $130 million on interiors by Tony Chi, whose London moment is good—very good. It gives the hotel enough stealth-wealth gravitas to take on the likes of Claridge’s—from where, as it happens, the Rosewood poached its general manager, the charming Michael Bonsor.
