Aarhus Becomes the New Capital of Scandinavian Cool

Copenhagen will share the spotlight next year as Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city, is crowned the European Capital of Culture and Region of Gastronomy in 2017. Aarhus has always had cool architecture and excellent museums, but this year the city has organized unique cultural attractions including a 150-meter skywalk installation from renowned visual artist Olafur Eliasson, a contemporary ballet that rethinks writer Jonathan Safran Foer’s book Tree of Codes, and an ambitious new art project, “The Garden—End of Times, Beginning of Times,” that will span four kilometers of the city’s coast. The legend of Noma still overshadows most of Denmark’s dining scene, but Aarhus is home to three Michelin-star restaurants, including Hærværk, Substans, and Frederikshøj, as well as hip, innovative spots like Såårt. Plus, nature is easily accessible: Aarhus boasts some of Denmark’s best beaches and Mols Bjerge National Park is just a short drive away.
