Local legend has it that during a visit to the United Arab Emirates in the late 1980s, Prince Charles, an architecture buff, asked the ruler of the country to spare Bastakiya—one of the oldest residential areas in Dubai—which had been slated for demolition. A far cry from newly constructed downtown, the historic district is defined by narrow winding pathways, courtyard homes and traditional barjeels (wind towers). It also boasts some of the best cafés, shops, galleries, and boutique hotels in town, as well as the Dubai Museum (Al Souq Al Kabeer; 971-4-353-1862). Al Hamriya, Bur Dubai; 971-4/353-9090.
