By Maya Kachroo-Levine on May 28, 2020

Not only are these cars the most expensive on the market right now, but they're also the rarest.

Expensive automobiles have long since been a symbol of luxury, status, and elite travel. It’s so much more than getting from point A to point B; considering one of the most expensive cars on the market is akin to picking out a coveted painting from your favorite world-known artist. These car designers are perfecting their craft year in and year out, optimizing for speed, sourcing the best engines and premium materials, and ultimately, earning their six and seven-figure price tags.

These luxurious vehicles are nine of the most expensive cars in the world right now:

Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita: $4.8 million

The Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita can reach more than 250 mph, but the design and exclusivity is really what you’re paying for with this vehicle. It is perhaps the hardest car to secure in the world right now—they’re making only two models. Koenigsegg calls this vehicle “a diamond on wheels” and the name Trevita comes from a Swedish phrase meaning “three whites.”

Ferrari 812 Superfast: $366,730

There are few cars in this world that could elicit a reaction quite like the Ferrari 812 Superfast. To put it lightly, this vehicle is gorgeous—a true artistic feat. It’s also the first Ferrari to feature Electric Power Steering and a newly designed 12-cylinder engine. The exterior is built to be supremely aerodynamic, while the interiors feature a sporty, leather-covered aesthetic.

Bentley Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase: $367,925

This Bentley is the car you imagine cruising around Europe in. The brand describes it as, “Designed for customers with a preference for being driven, it offers a first-class air-travel experience on the road.” The Bentley Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase comes with several customizable features and focuses on “rear seat luxury,” offering a stunning back cabin with extra legroom and a sunroof.

Hennessey Venom GT: $1.8 million

The Hennessey Venom GT can get up to 310 mph on the open road and features a 1,800-horsepower, F5 engine called “Fury.” Hennessey produced only 24 Venom GTs—12 for the U.S., and 12 to be sold internationally. Though the Hennessey Venom is one of the most expensive cars you can buy right now, it’ll be a while before you’re behind the wheel. The first few vehicles have just gone into testing as of Q2 2020.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase: $497,525

Rolls-Royce insists that every Phantom is different; it reinvents itself with each purchase because, “each Phantom is crafted to the vision of its patron, a manifestation of our philosophy that unique is rarely experienced.” Rolls-Royce Phantom is arguably the most tranquility you can find in a vehicle—it’s the quietest cabin Rolls-Royce has ever conceived of. Rolls-Royce considers the privacy and “secrecy” of the Phantom to be the purest form of automotive indulgence.

Bugatti Chiron: $2.9 million

With the potential to hit 310 mph, the Bugatti Chiron is likely to be one of the most coveted cars of the decade. Priced at $2,990,000, it also tops the most expensive car in the world lists. The buyer gets to work with Bugatti designers directly to tailor their interiors, such that no Chiron interior is quite like the one that came before.

Tesla Roadster: Starting at $200,000

The Tesla Roadster has a base price of $200,000 but can be customized for a much higher price tag. The all-electric vehicle can get to 250 mph with an acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds. Tesla says their supercar “maximizes the potential of aerodynamic engineering—with record-setting performance and efficiency.”

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ: $526,865

The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ gets up to 217 mph thanks to the need-for-speed V12 engine. Lamborghini considers this model a refusal to compromise, featuring the latest driving technology without sacrificing high-concept design, and producing a car that is fit for both racing and luxury. They are making just 63 Aventador SVJs, each utilizing an exclusive Lamborghini color palette.

Ferrari 488 Pista Spider: $394,324

Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is the iconic brand’s 50th “open top model.” Ferrari says you get the best of both worlds with the Pista Spider: vacation driving and race car luxury. The model “combines the finest race-developed technological solutions with the joy of en plein air driving to deliver an exhilarating experience behind the wheel.”
