Bangkok, Thailand: The Siam

It’s clear that the owner could’ve gotten a lot more bang for his buck from the real estate: three acres of prime riverfront land in the palace district. Instead he constructed just 39 suites and villas, four from 100-year-old teakwood houses, planted pretty walkways and gardens, and shopped the world for antiques—many of which he hung on the walls of the authentic Muay Thai gym. Of the rooms, the black-and-white Deco interiors are a favorite, but the secret weapon here is manager Jason M. Friedman: He maintains a sharp staff while generously sharing the inside track on where to eat in Bangkok, rather than keeping his guests prisoners of The Siam’s own very good Thai kitchen. Rooms start at $500; 3/2 Thanon Khao, Vachirapayabal, Dusit; 66-2/206-6999; thesiamhotel.com.
