Nandaime, Nicaragua

Meaning “heaven” in the indigenous Chorotega language, Nekupe (from $750; Nandaime; 800-510-0611; is Nicaragua’s first luxury country resort, offering an alternative from the beaches and cities with its setting on a 1,300-acre nature reserve, with views out to the Concepción and Maderas Volcanos. About a 30-minute drive from the historic town of Granada, the lodge (opened in November 2016) was first conceived by Nicaraguan philanthropists Alfredo and Theresita Pellas as a private family retreat: a sanctuary created by building water reservoirs, nurturing wildlife, and reforesting over 14,000 trees. Even now that it’s been opened to the public the familial atmosphere remains. The eight accommodations can be booked separately or as a buy-out, and range from grand suites in the main house (each with plunge pools and expansive decks) to four standalone villas; all come with a personal ATV for exploring the grounds. Activities are designed for bonding, too, from cigar and rum tastings and cooking classes at the outdoor chef’s table to ropes courses, target shooting, horseback riding, and folkloric dance lessons. Day trips like volcano hikes and coffee plantation tours can be arranges, but after a couple idyllic days of stargazing or mountaintop yoga, most guests are happy to just stay put.
