Welcome to your new happy place.
This article is intended to serve as inspiration for future travel—when it is safe to do so.
Treehouse hotels offer an experience completely unlike what you’d find at a luxury city hotel. Trite though it may sound, a magnificent treehouse, surrounded by lush greenery, really does inspire a sense of wonder. And contrary to popular belief, staying in a treehouse doesn’t have to feel like glorified camping. At these treehouse hotels, the luxury hospitality and top-notch amenities are offered to guests, even while they’re suspended 40 feet into the air. These are the best treehouse hotels to inspire your daydreams and future travel plans:
In San José del Cabo, tucked away from the lively bustle of the city, lies Acre, a property with 12 treehouse accommodations. Suspended amidst the palm trees, these chic treehouses are outfitted with king-size beds and WiFi. Not only will you be lulled to sleep by the gentle breeze passing through the palms, but the intimate hotel offers guests an inclusive two-course breakfast, features a beautiful swimming pool, and even makes their own small-batch mezcal. Our favorite treehouse suite is the double-unit treehouse, with a suspension bridge connecting the two rooms.
In northern Sweden, in full view of the Lule River (not to mention the northern lights, weather and season permitting), TreeHotel features seven treehouses immersed in the Swedish forest. Each treehouse is designed by a noteworthy Scandinavian architect, including the UFO treehouse (which really does look like a UFO) and the 7th Room (a Legend Awards honoree for best hotel suite with its own northern lights viewing room). Climb the suspension bridge to the Mirrorcube, whose exterior is covered with glass mirrors to reflect the natural, tree-dense surroundings.
An addition to andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge and andBeyond Ngala Tented Camp, andBeyond Ngala Treehouse is a four-story private accommodation that opened to the public in February 2020. A totally new experience on the private game reserve, guests can now relax 39 feet in the air with incomparable views of the reserve. The treehouse even has an outdoor rooftop bed and lounge area for guests who want to spend a night under the stars.
In addition to suites not suspended in mid-air for the more grounded traveler, Chewton Glen offers four exceptional treehouse experiences. Their newest treehouse, The Yews, is suspended 35 feet in the air and can accommodate eight adults and four children. For a romantic retreat, you can’t do better than Chewton Glen’s Treehouse Hideaway Suite, featuring a stunning outdoor hot tub on the terrace.
Canyon Ranch, introduced their first retreat model, Canyon Ranch Wellness Retreat – Woodside in November of 2019. Sitting on 16 acres in Woodside, California, the hotel features a main lodge, as well as 24 guest rooms set in luxe treehouses. The treehouses, with glass floor-to-ceiling windows, are 35 to 50 feet up, sprawled amidst the California redwoods.
The accommodations at the HOSHINOYA Bali are luxury villas all set along the property’s tree-lined, design envy-inspiring pool. However, part of the property experience is enjoying breakfast or an afternoon cup of tea in HOSHINOYA Bali’s Sky Gazebos, steel treehouses suspended in the middle of the Balinese jungle. Because this hotel is built right into the forest, much of the property features treehouse-style elevation, including the outdoor patio where daily yoga practice is held and the main dining room, which serves delectable multi-course Japanese-Balinese fusion meals every night. But lounging on the sofas in these suspended Cafe Gazebos simply can’t be beat.
On New Zealand’s South Island, Hapuku Lodge features five treehouses nestled into the Kaikoura Seaward Mountain Range. The treehouses, suspended approximately 30 feet off the ground, overlook Kaikoura's mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The one-bedroom treehouses feature fireplaces and luxurious “soaking tubs,” while the two Family Treehouses “both have a master bedroom in the upper branches and a somewhat smaller bedroom in the lower branches.”
Lion Sands Game Reserve, in Kruger National Park, is known for their over-the-top Kingston Treehouse. The treehouse experience can be booked in addition to your stay within Lion Sands. It starts with a romantic picnic dinner, followed by some dusk game viewing, and a relaxing, open-air slumber under the stars. The treehouse, in the Sabi Sand, is suspended over the bush and features a private deck with a dining table and a king-sized bed under a canopy.
Jicaro Island Lodge is not simply a treehouse hotel—it’s a private island treehouse hotel. Sitting on a private island in the Granada Isletas of Lake Nicaragua, the lodge is focused on wellness and sustainability. The nine casitas are built in a treehouse style and are two stories with a terrace overlooking the water.
