The country is allowing international luxury yachts to charter within its waters for the first time ever.

Costa Rica is quickly becoming a beach getaway hot spot. While its picturesque beaches and lush jungles have attracted visitors for years, the Central American country is experiencing a boom in interest lately. In fact, the luxury resort community of Peninsula Papagayo just revealed two new enclaves with homes by architect Antoine Predock. But now, boating lovers will be itching to go to the country as it just announced that they are opening to international superyacht operations.

The Costa Rica Legislative Assembly (Congress) recently had a landmark vote of 47-0 that would reform existing marina laws to make it possible for international large yacht operations. It was the world’s leading full-service yachting company, Fraser Yachts, that collaborated with the Costa Rica Marina association to reach this historic reform.

So, what does it all mean? For the first time, international luxury charters and superyachts over 79 feet will be able to explore the 800 miles of Costa Rican coastline with marina facilities in Papagayo, Herradura, Quepos, and Golfito, and more. And the charters could remain in Costa Rica for a year.

The bill was in its initial stages last year and was signed into law on April 5. While there is still more to cover as the legislation becomes codified, everything is expected to be finalized and put into operation by September 2021.

“Costa Rica has long been on the wish list of so many of our charter clients in search of the exceptional. As indeed it has been for the owners of many of the yachts we represent for charter worldwide,” Fraser CEO Raphael Sauleau told Departures in a statement. “When great minds with a vision get together, anything is possible. Costa Rica has so much to offer; we cannot wait to be able to facilitate clients from around the world having the chance to explore it with a yacht as their base.”
