Rome on My Mind
A writer reflects on the neighborhood restaurant he loved and lost in the Eternal City — and shares a few enduring local gems.
Singer Dodie talks dance circles and flying off jet skis.
There’s nothing like going to Greece and dancing to Zorba’s Dance in a circle with strangers after watching someone balance 20 glasses on their head.
New Zealand had incredible energy! Everyone is so positive and polite.
One off-day on tour, we hired a boat and had a barbecue in the middle of Shasta Lake in Redding, California. We jumped off the top deck into the water, which was pretty cold, but we’d swim to catch up to the boat and sunbathe to dry and warm up until doing it again. I was also flung off a jet ski after turning too fast, and had to swim back after slapping into the water. Which was an interesting experience!
At just 25, dodie has already done a lot of living. Some of that has played out on camera as she made a name for herself as a singer and writer online, amassing millions of fans with her disarmingly honest videos and affecting, intimate singing style. She headlined and sold out London’s Roundhouse before her first album was even out, played the Hollywood Palladium and Terminal 5 on the other side of the pond, and scored two top-10 EPs. Her debut album, “Build a Problem,” released May 2021, has gained critical acclaim from NPR, Pitchfork, and the New York Times, to name a few.
Literary, frenetic, and bold, illustrator/animator Joanna Neborsky’s darkly humorous collage work has been featured in the New York Times, Travel + Leisure, and W magazine, and has attracted notice in Bookforum and the Paris Review. Her latest book, her own modern take on the Proust Questionnaire, was published in 2016. Neborsky lives in Los Angeles.
