Orange County Is Having a Moment

Just south of Los Angeles, a flurry of openings has upped the luxury ante in California’s beach community.

When the Ranch at Laguna Beach (rooms from $350; 31106 S. Coast Hwy.; 800-223-3309; opened in October in the Aliso and Wood Canyons, the 97-room hotel became a sophisticated alternative to the area’s surfside properties—and the only one with a golf course. Nearby, the 23-room Casa Laguna Hotel & Spa (rooms from $300; 2510 S. Coast Hwy.; 949-494-2996; has been completely reimagined by Martyn Lawrence Bullard with the interior designer’s own fabric prints. In Dana Point, Monarch Beach Resort (rooms from $395; One Monarch Beach Resort; 949-234-3900; finished a $40 million transformation last summer with a 400-room redo and a new Miraval spa. Up the coast in Newport Beach, Lido Marina Village (3434 Via Lido; 949-673-1400; is a new SoCal-oriented dockside shopping destination adjacent to 47 boat slips.
