Part of the rhythm of living in Manhattan is getting out of the city on weekends. Fortunately, there's abundant countryside in all directions. This guide covers five options that are three hours or less from the city and contain the requisite weekender mix of restful scenery and fine restaurants and inns as well as a sprinkling of sights—some dating back to the country's beginnings.

Remember that many of these inns are small—some with as few as three or four rooms—so book early.
