Spa Report: The Maremma

On the waterfront

There's a reason Harrison Ford chose to stay at Italy's Tombolo Talasso Resort. The new spa is in an untrampled beach town in the Maremma, a rustic area of southern Tuscany. Shaded by umbrella pines, the hotel is a separated from a private 655-foot stretch of beach by only a narrow lane. Huge windows bring light into every stylish room. This is one of the country's first thalassotherapy spas: The pools and treatments use mineral- and algae-rich seawater pumped from a spot a half mile into the Med. Most guests spend their days in the spa cave. Afterward, the scene moves to the terrace restaurant, where the carb-counted and fat-monitored food is delicious. Rates, $400-$1,220; treatments, $55-$165. At 3 Via del Corallo, Marina di Castagneto Carducci; 39-056/574-530;
