You don't need a license to drive a boat, but instruction makes it safer. The Annapolis Power Boat School offers the Five-Day Power Boat Cruising Class, in which you tour the Chesapeake Bay, dine out on regional cuisine, stay at a different harborside inn each night, and learn to drive a 30-foot powerboat.

The class, run by Coast Guard-licensed instructors, begins Monday morning and ends Friday afternoon. Lessons include low-speed maneuvering in tight harbors, cruising at 20 knots in open bays, and docking and driving skills. Instruction also includes navigation, course plotting, and knot-tying techniques. $1,520 per person. $ Annapolis Power Boat School, 601 Sixth Street, Annapolis, MD 21403; 800-638-9192; www.annapolispowerboat.com.
