Every now and then comes a hole that reaches true excellence, and the latest is the par-five third on Bandon Trails (part of southern Oregon's Bandon Dunes resort). Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, No. 3 is a 554-yard stretch of sand followed by fairway, all surrounded by sand dunes, meadows, and forest. At the tee, a cool breeze hits your face, a reminder of the nearby ocean. Take a swing with the driver, aiming just right of some nasty bunkers. Bust a long iron, paying heed to the sinister sand that abounds, then chip up to the green, where firs and pines flank the hole on three sides. Putt birdie into play, making par a sure thing. From here you can at last catch sight of the Pacific. Greens fee, $75-$200; 888-345-6008; www.bandondunesgolf.com.
