Dutch treat

Wybe van der Gang, an engineer who used to make mechanical parts for space travel, founded Van der Gang Watches after searching to no avail for a timepiece that would satisfy both his technical standards and his Dutchman's eye for design. Produced in an edition of 250 in a town 90 miles north of Amsterdam, the men's watch uses rhodium, a metal commonly found in spacecraft. The typeface for its mirrored numbers took a year to create (most watchmakers draw from a standard pool of fonts), and the clockwork itself is housed inside a virtually shockproof case—weighing only 18 grams—carved from a single piece of steel. $7,300; 31-515/442-350.
