The Sweet Escape

On the enduring allure of the tiki bar.

When portrait painter Sydney Albertini took time off during her pregnancy, she ended up discovering a whole new medium. What began as a few brushstrokes on plates at her mother's ceramics store in Greenwich, Connecticut, developed into a line of one-of-a-kind tableware. Albertini customizes her signature patterns—a fiery red coral design is popular—to match clients' tastes and paints each piece in her East Hampton, New York, studio. "They're truly authentic," says Adriana Cisneros, who commissioned the artist to make the place settings for her wedding. "No one's ever seen anything like them." Three-piece setting, $210; 631-907-9371; www.albertinistudio.net.
