Why can't every movie theater be like the Gold Class Cinema in Bangkok? Instead of cramped seats and Coke-stained carpeting, there are leather recliners, each with pillows, blankets, and snuggly socks piled on top. The sound system is state of the art, as is the bar, which is stocked with high-end liquor, beer, and a surprisingly good selection of wine. You can even have that Cabernet and chicken sandwich served by one of the waitresses. In such a setting, a high-budget, lowbrow Travolta blockbuster—in my case, Ladder 49—could almost pass as art.
