La Cappella at Hotel Villa San Michele is not the largest room by any means (that, in this former monastery overlooking Florence, is the Michelangelo suite) but it may be the coziest and most private—the reason honeymooners often request it. The room itself is simple: an ironwork framed bed, iron chandelier, terra-cotta floors, ocher stone walls, blue Renaissance-style chairs. And it has the most interesting bathroom—what was once the altar area, with frescoes on its vaulted ceiling. But tucked away as it is on a hill in the garden, it has a view that makes it really special.

It overlooks the main building and the red roofs and Duomo of the city beyond. The hotel closes for the season on December 3, and it reopens in March. The best time to visit is in the spring, when the garden is blooming and it is warm enough to sit outside. $820 (including half board). 4 Via Doccia, Fiesole; 800-223-6800; 39-055-567-8200; fax 39-055-567-8250.
