When luxury-linens maker Anichini wanted beautiful, hand-painted beds for its retail stores and four showrooms, it commissioned Decorative Painted Finishes (DPF). Partners Martha von Ammon and Denise Welch-May specialize in using layers of paint and varnish to replicate antique finishes and patinas. For Anichini they cooked up rich wall finishes that resembled the aged plaster of an Italian villa. The duo also custom-design headboards, fabricated by master woodworkers, that incorporate finely painted botanicals, such as the Bird Bed . Von Ammon and Welch-May say their artistry lies in the layering—"It takes ten layers to achieve the proper patina," says the former—and in the limited-edition colorways they devise with their clients. Custom-designed beds, $3,000 and up. For information, call 802-295-5064.
