Carved Marble

Reviving an all-but-forgotten 17th-century art

Bianco Bianchi has spent a lifetime reviving scagliola, an all-but-forgotten 17th-century art in which carved marble or slate is inlaid with colored paste made from a powdered local stone, selenite. Today this master craftsman's collection is the envy of many a decorative arts museum, and his atelier is busy producing custom tabletops, consoles, and decorative objects requested by a who's who list of royal houses. $95-$11,770. 117 Viale Europa; tel/fax 39-055-686-118;
