Of all the antiques shops in New York's Hudson Valley, East Market Street, in Red Hook, about two hours from Manhattan, is one we really love. Owner Sandra Mackintosh Buhalis, a sculptor whose work is in the Guggenheim's collection, has assembled one of the largest collections of Americana we've seen. There are 19th-century cupboards and benches, of course, but also manhole covers, birdhouses, nautical beckets, and candy scoops. "I get really excited by utilitarian things," Buhalis says. Excited indeed: She doesn't have just one wood ampersand but 30 of them, which she sells as one lot for $9,500; not a few painted horns, but 40, which go for $13,500. Though perhaps not for casual browsers, East Market Street has become a destination for serious collectors from as far away as California. At 25 East Market Street; 845-758-9000.
