If there’s one tradition we’d like to import from our European friends, it’s the idea of August long vacations. Before heading back into the fall, with its shortening days and dull daily grind, Europeans go on one last epic vacation. A swan’s song to summer, if you will.
And we understand why as August is a month that’s chock-full of promise. Everybody is out and about, running to catch as much of the last of summer as humanly possible. All around the world, there are endless festivals, carnivals, fairs and things to celebrate.
Take off the dog days of summer to throw yourself into a new cultural fair halfway around the world or spend time hiking on trails that are less crowded than normal. Here are eight destinations so enticing for August, you’ll probably want to take the whole month off to explore them all.
Every August, the Scottish capital transforms into the world’s largest arts festival as Edinburgh Fringe. Across the city, cafes, theatres and pubs host acts in dance, comedy, theatre, music, opera, spoken word and much more. Basically, if you’re into live entertainment, you’ve got three weeks of endless options.

Kenya
August is one of the best times of year to visit Kenya if you’re aiming to spot some magnificent animals. It’s around this time of year that wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes partake on their great migration along the Mara River. This is also the time of year that crocodiles come out of the river to prey so be warned: you’re likely to see some Nat Geo-levels of survival.

Newfoundland, Canada
Visit Newfoundland in August if you want to see the land without having to contend with its wintertime temperatures. Head to the coast for a chance to see 22 species of whale as they feed on Newfoundland’s capelin, krill, and squid. Take advantage of the area’s pleasant weather at this time and plan a bonfire on the beach, pick some berries and hike to see puffins congregate on the bay.

Tanzania
If you’re into adventure travel, August is considered one of the best times of year to climb Kilimanjaro. It’s peak climbing season but there is considerably less rain—lessening chances of mudslides and increasing chances of a successful summit. After you’ve completed the trek, spend time kicking around Tanzania and spotting wildlife. Elephant herds and lion packs will likely be out in full force around this time of year.

Patagonia, Argentina
Patagonia is on many travelers’ bucket lists for its cinematic natural beauty. But if you hate dealing with many other travelers crossing off their bucket list, visit Patagonia in August. The area will just be coming off its winter and low season—meaning you’ll be able to hike Perito Moreno without jostling for the best views.

London
London may not have the reputation of being a summer city. But one day at the Notting Hill Carnival should change your mind. The August street fair is the biggest in the city with more than two million people in attendance every year. It’s an over-the-top celebration of Caribbean culture that represents London’s diversity at its best.

Valencia, Spain
Every August, the Valencian town of Buñol springs to international attention. For the past 74 years, the town has been home to La Tomatina—you know, that festival in Spain where people throw tomatoes at each other. There is no reason for it. Very little historical significance. It’s just pure fun. And isn’t that the best part of summer?
