Castello Sonnino, Montespertoli

Once home to Italian statesman Sidney Sonnino, who lived there from the turn of the 19th century into the 20th, this aristocratic pile now belongs to Baron Alessandro and Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino, who are on hand to greet guests but, otherwise, stay discreetly in the background. Based around a crenellated medieval watchtower, the castle features frescoed rooms, a historic library, a kitchen with a huge open fireplace and a private chapel. Until recently, it was only possible to rent the tower, but now the family is making the whole property, which is also a Chianti wine estate, available exclusively through Bellini Travel. How authentic is the experience? Instead of a pool, there’s a lake. Rental rates upon request (sleeps 16);; book through
