How to Make a Timepiece Timeless

New York City boutique Oroboro offers a uniquely curated collection of homeware, art, and clothing from a variety of emerging designers.
TUCKED INTO MANHATTAN’S Nolita neighborhood, Oroboro is a boutique that has been “supporting mindful creative expressions” since 2011, with its tightly curated collection of clothing, ceramics, textiles, and homewares. From rare and emerging designers representative of its owner April Hughes’ styling background, it’s clear that each item has been vetted by an individual with unerring, worldly taste and an eye for quality. While New York City has no shortage of perfectly curated boutiques, Hughes’ vision for Oroboro expands far beyond artful tchotchkes and throw pillows. A pass through the brick-and-mortar store (or a quick perusal of its website), offers a shopping experience that is as informative as it is dynamic — a visual shorthand of emerging designers, interior design trends, and outside-the-box wellness products (the website has a special section dedicated to tinctures). It’s one of the only boutiques I’ve visited in recent memory where it is possible to buy a piece of art by Amy Dov, some earth-toned rice wax candles, and a chic new pair of Mari Giudicelli boots, all in the same place.
One of our favorite Oroboro finds of late is the oversized hand pillow from Viennese textile company Wiener Times. This enormous five-fingered snuggler is a good example of Hughes’ irreverent curation: With a removable, patchworked cover inspired by a 1924 textile drawing, it’s both a conversation starter and a true comfort — the perfect thing to have lying around when you just need someone (or something) to hold you.
