What’s your most treasured personal ritual?
My most treasured personal ritual is getting an old-fashioned hot towel shave with a straight razor. There is a classic barbershop in LA at the Montage Hotel — Gornik & Drucker — you have to trust the guy with a blade, but I wouldn’t dare try to do it myself. There will be blood.
The most beautiful restaurant experience?
Massimo Bottura, of Osteria Francescana, personally served us a seven-course dinner in his ancient vinegar cellar. It wasn’t traditionally elegant, but it was something better. Of all places you would want to be in the world at that moment, you were already there.
Most ridiculous travel purchase you’ve ever made?
The most ridiculous travel purchase I’ve ever made was when I bought a fez in Fez.
