“Adding a floor lamp is a simple way to enrich the room’s ambiance,” says Laura Salviati of Milan-based lighting design studio Artemide. The company specializes in home décor pieces designed by architects and has collaborated with some of the world’s most talented designers including Zaha Hadid and Herzog & De Meuron.
“Our daily spaces are getting more and more flexible and dynamic. This is why a lighting project should be designed to provide a smart response to changing needs,” adds Salvati. But this practical approach to design doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun. Floor lamps can complement the overall design aesthetic of a room, blending perfectly in the décor, or become accents on their own.
Before you pick a lamp, think about what you need it for. Ambient floor lamps emit softer light while reading lamps are a stronger source of light. Then consider where you’d like to place it in your home. A floor lamp looks great next to a relaxing armchair, a desk, or a dining table.
“Calibrate light according to the activities carried out in the room,” suggests Salvati.
