Firm Description
Robert Kahn Architect, PC, is a boutique architectural firm that selectively works on projects that engage the architect's personal interest and generate meaningful impact for clients. The firm has attracted many clients from the creative arts, including actors Daniel Day-Lewis, Mary-Louise Parker, and Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates; playwright David Mamet; film directors Wes Anderson and Nicholas Hytner; artist Frank Stella, and musician Adam Duritz. Kahn has received many honors, including the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome. He has been both critic and professor, most recently at Yale where he held a Davenport Chair.

Approach to Residential Design
"I begin residential projects by asking each family member to compile a wish list without consideration for budget or space. Children are good at this," he says. "This exercise often brings new ideas to light, and the inclusion of long wished for elements." He feels strongly that design should have a defining idea that is carried out rigorously, while incorporating the clients’ needs and tastes. The practical and conceptual are equally important in designing a beautiful and comfortable home. His design process is fluid. As a project develops, elements are refined and sometimes significantly revised until clients are delighted with their choices.

Distinguishing Characteristics
In order to be intimately involved in every aspect of a project, Kahn has deliberately kept his office small. He's learned over the years that his most satisfying work, and the best results for the owner, is directly related to his personal involvement.

Work Influences
Kahn feels fortunate for his work with architect Sir James Stirling and collaboration with painter Frank Stella on many projects. He has a deep appreciation for the history of architecture and admiration for Le Corbusier and the formative Baroque architect Francesco Borromini.
