Bubbly from the Former Eastern Bloc

Bagrationi Royal Cuvée

We’ve deemed France and Italy the Old World of winemaking, but parts of the Balkans and Caucasus have been growing and vinifying grapes even longer. Look to Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, and Georgia for bubbly made from grapes you’ve never heard of. Bagrationi Royal Cuvée is 100 percent Chinebuli, a variety unique to Georgia. It has a summer hay freshness to go with its rich golden color and a toasted hazelnut note on the finish. $27 at Potomac Wines & Spirits; 3100 M St. NW, Washington, D.C.; 202-333-2847; potomacwines.com.
