When it comes to big wave surfers, Laird Hamilton is one of the first names that come to mind. With the launch of his eponymous clothing line, Laird Apparel, late last year, the legendary athlete and watersport innovator will soon be known for functional and stylish resort wear, too.
More recently, Laird has teamed up with One&Only Resorts to offer guests a curated selection of the same high-performance workout gear, surf and swimwear, and lounging apparel in an exclusive set of colors. As the only hotel partner with these privileges, One&Only now offers the handsome designs—spanning subtle grays to bright aquas—at their Palmilla location in Los Cabos, Mexico, with other select locations to follow.
We tested a range of items from this seriously good-looking group, including board shorts, workout and water shirts, gym shorts and pants, which coordinate across the entire line. Between tops, bottoms, and outer layers, pretty much everything goes with everything else.
On a functional level, these clothes live up to their promised performance. Though we were unable to test the board shorts on an actual surfboard and had to settle for laps in an indoor pool (something about those pesky New York winters), we threw everything we could at the clothes and they came through like Laird on a long board. The long-sleeved surf shirt with UV protection was great for both cardio training and weight lifting, as was the reversible navy blue and aqua tank. The RPM workout shorts also doubled as an excellent swimsuit, staying on tight through a tough pool workout, and, as a bonus, drying quickly so we could move into the weight room without having to change. This flexibility—to go from the water to the gym to the street—was one of Hamilton’s goals in designing the gear. As a result, all the fabrics for the workout wear are sweat-wicking and quick to dry.
But don’t be fooled by the surf theme; these clothes work far from the beach as well. The Stealth-Tech, a zip-up mock turtleneck, was great as both a workout top and a base layer for a particularly chilly day of skiing. And the Trainer, a sleek, fitted track pant, was our favorite bottom layer for before and after the gym. For lounging, the Decompression sweat shorts were made of thick, comfortable fabric perfect for post-workout relaxation.
Having spent years advising on the clothing lines of other manufacturers (such as Wonderwall), Hamilton had plenty of experience, both on the board and in the boardroom, to draw on when creating his own line. What made the match up with One&Only a no-brainer was their shared sense of priorities: the beach, fitness, leisure, and, of course, a sense of style.
With his upcoming Live Life Alive experience June 10–13 at One&Only Palmilla, Hamilton teams up with his wife (and professional volleyball player) Gabrielle Reece to offer guests a taste of that lifestyle. The four-day health and wellness getaway includes training sessions with Hamilton and Reece in the pool, the gym, and on a board, all complemented by three-piece outfits supplied by Laird Apparel (for men) and Eden Activewear (for women) (from $3,900 for two in an ocean front room; Carretera Transpeninsular Km 7.5; 52-624/146-7000; oneandonlyresorts.com).
While the new clothing line might not make your surfing abilities equal to Hamilton’s, when it comes to smart, high-performance clothing, at least you’ll be riding the same wave.
Items from the Laird Apparel collection are available at One&Only Palmilla, with select One&Only Resorts properties to follow.
