When it comes to truly iconic pieces of clothing, the leather jacket is right there occupying the same realm of fashion eternity as the trench coat, the LBD, and denim. And it’s easy to see why it became such an item of perpetual necessity to both men and women.

Initially worn by military pilots at the beginning of the last century, it wasn’t until the 50s that leather jackets reached peak cult status thanks to Hollywood’s then-bad boys Marlon Brando and James Dean. Suddenly, the biker leather jacket became a sign of coolness, and together with the white t-shirt and a pair of jeans, it made for the ultimate cool kids uniform that anyone could pull off no motorcycle required. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Nowadays, designers love playing with the classic moto-inspired style, re-inventing it in supple suede, for example. Bomber jackets and even safari jackets are given the leather treatment rendering them decidedly more rock ‘n’ roll. Even the equally iconic trench coat, usually cut from gabardine, is given a cool leather makeover.
