Personal Effects: Kareem Rashed

The DEPARTURES Fashion Editor talks the not-so-everyday items he can't live without.

“I’m rarely not wearing a watch; I feel naked without one. My Hermès Cape Cod was a college graduation gift from my parents, it’s a classic and very sentimental. But my latest favorite is this 1930’s Reverso—I spotted it at the preview for Hodinkee’s new shop and was immediately smitten. The back is engraved with the initials A.O. and a horseshoe that says “LOVE YOU.” I have no idea what the story behind it is, but I love that it has a history. I never leave the house without a spritz of this. I first discovered it at the Serge Lutens shop in Paris’s Palais Royal (a favorite shopping pit stop) and have been loyal ever since. The scent is technically lavender-based, but I like that it’s kind of indecipherable. To me, it just smells chic. I grew up loving ballet and, living in New York, feel so lucky to have NYCB right here. My favorite is Glass Pieces, choreographed by Jerome Robbins with music by Philip Glass, and I make a point to see it at least once every season. There’s nothing better than a night at Lincoln Center followed by steak and a Manhattan at P.J. Clarke’s across the street. I bought this set of antique mismatched blue and white plates at Bellocchio in San Francisco (where I grew up) shortly before moving out. They’ve been with me ever since and always remind me of home (and Bellocchio, which is one of my favorite stores in the world). Iced coffee is my lifeblood; I have at least two a day, year round. The best is from Blue Bottle, but I don’t discriminate, most any will do the trick. A good friend first introduced me to the mille crepe from Lady M (it’s her birthday cake of choice, and now mine). Ever since, it’s been my go-to for dinner parties. I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love it. I feel like most people spend their lives trying to find the perfect pair of jeans, so I am especially grateful to have find mine in 3x1’s M3. The raw denim is the perfect weight (not too stretchy, but not too heavy) and totally versatile. And the cut is my ideal: trim, but not skinny. Since finding them all my other jeans have fallen out of rotation.”
