A highly personal inventory of essential items

Architect, engineer, artist

“I painted and made sculpture long before practicing architecture, and I still draw and paint almost every day. All my designs start as sketches—I don’t use a computer, not even for e-mail. So when I’m traveling between projects [the latest being the Liège-Guillemins TGV rail station in Belgium], I always bring a set of St. Petersburg watercolors, a few da Vinci brushes, and a block of Arches paper. When at home in Zurich, Valencia, or New York, I like to enjoy good food—Italian, especially—and really good wine, like Vega-Sicilia Unico from the Ribera del Duero in northern Spain.”
