In fact, if there’s one room in your house where design plays an essential role because it does affect your mood: your bedroom. And bedside lamps are a necessity when it comes to bedroom décor.
To choose the perfect lamp, you must first consider its function.
“It serves as a great transition from your bright, overhead general lighting into your moody lighting for your nightly routine. The same goes for your morning wake-up––it’s best to ease into a fully-lit room,” says interior designer Mara Silber. “For this reason, dimmable lamps are a plus. You also need to consider an easily accessible on/off switch since the last thing you want to do is get out of bed,” she adds.
But the biggest mistake people make when shopping for bedside lamps is the size. Just because the base of the lamp fits on your bedside table doesn’t mean it’s the right size, according to Silber.
“Try not to have the shade diameter exceed half the width of the bedside table. As far as height, the bottom of the lampshade should come to about shoulder height, assuming the height of the bedside table is similar to the mattress height,” she adds.
And speaking of shades, there is another element where things can go wrong. Interior design expert Barbara Schmidt says one of the biggest faux pas she sees is a lamp base topped with the wrong sized shade.
“Usually I see shades that are way too small for the base,” she says.
And one last piece of advice: “Try out a lamp with a similar size in your space before purchasing anything,” suggests Schmidt. That will save you time that you could be spending reading in bed.
