Puttin’ (Back) on the Ritz Paris

Design Thierry Despont

An early look at the remaking of the grandest dame of Parisian hotels.

In August 2012, the Ritz Paris shut its doors for the first time in its 114-year history to undergo its most dramatic transformation to date—a restoration not only of its 143 rooms (including the suite named after Coco Chanel, perhaps the hotel’s most famous resident) but also of the health club, restaurants, roof and lobby. Now, nearly two years later, the property, with an overhaul by Thierry Despont, the New York–based architect and designer known for the revamp of London’s Dorchester hotel and the Statue of Liberty, is on the verge of making its return. “We’ve kept the ambiance intact,” says general manager Christian Boyens, “but updated the technology behind the walls.” Easily the most anticipated hotel “opening” in years, the Ritz Paris shares with us some exclusive renderings of what we can expect when the icon on the Place Vendôme comes back in late 2015.
