The Beaumont Antony Gormley’s Living Sculpture ROOM

For the true art aficionado, what better gift than a stay in an inhabitable sculpture? The Beaumont in London is home to Turner Prize-winner Antony Gormley’s experiential-work-of-art-meets-suite called ROOM.

The exterior of the suite takes the shape of a three-story crouching man made of stainless steel— an answer to the City of Westminster’s requirement that new buildings contain public art. The interior is a dark space entirely clad in fumed-oak, featuring only a single, all-white bed and can be taken to pitch-black darkness and silence at the flip of a switch.

The heavily insulated walls create an extremely quiet inside, free from the sounds of the city. There is a window high up where guests can see the night sky but no surrounding buildings as Gormley wanted views to be unencumbered. The unique space stems from Gormley’s desire to create an atmosphere where guests focus on the ‘inner space,’ to achieve “a meditative stillness, to lose a sense of one’s body in the darkness and to allow the mind to expand.”
