Update Your Wardrobe With These Stylish Men’s Winter Outfits

By Jenny Hartman on December 27, 2018

A shift in season is the perfect time to reassess what may be missing from your wardrobe.

As you swap out light layers for heavier ones—linen for wool and cashmere, short sleeves for long—consider what elements are lacking or in need of an update. Perhaps it’s a solid knit in a new color or one of the season’s standout prints from, for example, Prada or Dries Van Noten. Starting with staple pieces that are well made and equally special and classic makes putting together men’s winter outfits easy and effortless. A good pair of raw denim, a trouser, a well-tailored blazer, outerwear and a few accessories should do the trick. Once established, these pieces should apply to any occasion and temperature, and pair equally well with new additions to the closet.

The Jean: Eytys Cypress Raw Denim

Raw denim is the ultimate raconteur. This deeply personal item reveals all through its creases and color—a map of lines made by time and wear. Eytys offers the perfect pair with an easy straight silhouette that can be worn fitted to the body or relaxed if purchased at a bigger size. It is tailored with a medium waist and contrast stitching, which offer an elevated feel.

The Gym Bag: Caraa Remus Forest Bag

A gym bag is an easy way to add color to your morning commute. This Caraa bag in forest green is a lightweight, convertible, water-repellent crossbody that adds a refined sporty feel to any ensemble. It works just as well with gym clothes as it does with a suit.

The Work Bag: Mark Cross Parker Brief

Few pieces can elevate a man’s wardrobe like a new beautiful leather briefcase. Leather house, Mark Cross, has an exquisite selection of classic and modern briefcases. The Parker brief is a double top handle case, which also comes with an adjustable and detachable leather shoulder strap to help transition from a hand carry to a crossbody.

The Classic Knit: Everlane Heavyweight Cashmere Crew

Everlane is the perfect place to go for easy supplemental pieces. Their classic knitwear features an easy drape and relaxed fit. The Heavyweight Crew is done in a 7-gauge cashmere yarn from Inner Mongolia. It is durable, pill-less and softens with wear. While there are a range of neutrals and colors, the plum color offers versatility without being too predictable.

The Statement Piece: Dries Van Noten Slim-Fit Printed Quilted Shell Jacket

While wardrobe staples should be timeless, they don’t have to be boring. They should at times have something very special about them, so that they can at times pair well with louder pieces or enliven a simple outfit. As temperatures shift, ensure you have a quilted shell on hand. In typical Dries Van Noten fashion, this jacket features classic silhouette splashed with a beautiful marble pattern. It is a lightly padded quilted shell with drawstring hem.

The Trouser: Officine Generale Marcel Pants

A new pair of trousers can make old clothing feel new again. Start with a classic silhouette: single pleat, with a higher waist, a bit of volume and a tapered leg. Officine Generale is known for making clothing for everyday life that is both refined and stylish.

The Elevated Outerwear: Paul Smith Double Breasted Coat

A double-breasted coat in camel cashmere is enduringly elegant. It goes with just about anything for any occasion. It’s perfect over traditional outfits like a suit or a pair of jeans and somehow manages to look great over the less expected ensembles like sweatpants or gym clothes. Paul Smith is a master at refined outerwear. This coat features long sleeves, a straight fit, front pockets, and double breasted front fastening.

The Suit Jacket: Berluti Wool Jacket

Sharp suiting elements are the cornerstone of a man’s wardrobe. After unpacking all your winter pieces, evaluate your suit supply and how each item fits. While some sets may be worthy of alterations or a good press, there may be a need for new options. If so, Berluti is always an effortless option. Their iconic tailoring is evident in this refined double-breasted wool-blend blazer.

The Outdoor Shirt: Filson Jac-Shirt

An outdoor shirt, which may also be called a weekend shirt is something warm, soft and durable. It is a shirt that layers over thermals or a soft tee and feel appropriate for weekend activities: lounging, yard work, home improvement, errands. It should feel sophisticated despite its practical construction and material. Filson’s Jac-shirt composed of 100% virgin wool is a heavy button up shirt that easily handles the elements.

The Printed Knit: Prada Diamond-Jacquard Virgin Wool Sweater

A sweater is an easy way to add print and color without having to take too much risk. This Prada piece draws inspiration from traditional argyle styles with a macro diamond print. It is slightly more wearable than the runway styles of the season but still brings boldness to classic outfits. It is crafted in Italy from soft virgin wool.

The Logo Sock: Gucci Interlocking G Cotton Socks

While wardrobe staples typically don’t include lots of logos, small accents like a sock or a tie are a perfect way to play with prints and logos that won’t go out of style. These Gucci socks feature the iconic diamond print of interlocking Gs.
