Christopher Kostow, chef of The Restaurant at Meadowood, the St. Helena, California, food and wine paradise that’s one of just two restaurants west of the Mississippi River to earn three Michelin stars (the other is French Laundry), makes his book debut with A New Napa Cuisine (Ten Speed Press). Part personal history, part cooking manual, the book honors the valley and its artisans and vintners with whom Kostow works. “I think that the recipes, while important, are just that: instructions on how to make something,” Kostow says. “I find the story to be even more interesting—the people and partners, the collaborators, staff and history. The recipes are like the syntax of a language; they are simply a means of expressing the overall ethos of the work.”
