While the classic tie-dye technique has been around for many centuries in countries like China, India, Indonesia, and Japan, it rose to popularity in the U.S. in the middle of the 60's when hippies adopted the psychedelic patterns as an expression of their free spirit.
And to this day, that boho, counterculture vibe is still very much part of the tie-dye image. But just like every other trend that periodically comes back into the spotlight, this one too has been given a modern makeover.
Gone are the highly saturated hues with designers opting for softer shades. The patterns also largely vary from random bursts of color and horizontal, almost gradient-like stripes to extremely intricate and detailed. But one thing unites them all—an undeniably fun vibe. Maybe that’s why we see it everywhere this year—on t-shirts, dresses, hats, sneakers, and even earrings.
Here, we rounded up our favorite tie-dye pieces that will add a pop of color to your closet this summer.
