In Praise of the Venetian Slipper

As the “furlane” experiences a renaissance, our editor reflects on her nostalgic...

There’s no denying that men’s lapel pins are having a moment. If award show season was any indication (which, as history shows, it always does), there was hardly a lapel that wasn’t embellished with a pin or brooch (or an outside chest pocket, as actor Timothée Chalamet elevated his nylon Prada tracksuit with a vintage Cartier ruby-and-diamond brooch at the Oscars). There was also actor Antonio Banderas sporting a bespoke, celestial diamond cluster from Atelier Swarovski Fine Jewelry. And producer Taika Waititi in a one-of-a-kind, diamond, emerald, and pearl piece with major Art Deco vibes. The list goes on.

And while the comeback of the tuxedo jewelry signals a return to old Hollywood style, historically, men’s lapel pins were worn as symbols of status and wealth. For centuries, men traditionally used jewels as a way to distinguish themselves, from their placement in society to their military rank. Lapel pins and brooches were considered badges of honor. And now, for the first time in a very long time, men are (thankfully!) embracing the bejeweled pieces again. The difference is now, these pins don’t need to be confined to black-tie or special status. They work equally well as a way to bring casual ensembles to life—plus, they make great conversation pieces. Here, a roundup of the most Departures-worthy lapel companions—from one-of-a-kind vintage treasures, to more eccentric, playful finds.

Tiffany & Co.

Tiffany & Co. yellow gold pin is a classic option with just enough emerald and diamond flair. It’s available for $95,000 at select Tiffany & Co. locations or through Tiffany.com.

Nikos Koulis

Who doesn’t like the sound of a trillion brown diamond? Nikos Koulis’s pin boasts an exceptionally-cut big one, contrasted with softer pearls, pave diamonds, and white gold.

It’s available for $234,575 through Nikoskoulis.gr.

Cartier

This Cartier High Jewelry piece is meant to elevate even the most casual of looks. Its Art Deco style is achieved from the geometric layering of white gold, onyx, emerald, and diamonds, and it’s available by appointment at select Cartier boutiques. The price is upon request.

David Yurman

David Yurman’s white gold pendant is a burst of pave diamonds into one perfectly symmetrical star. It’s available for $13,500 at David Yurman’s Upper East store (5 East 57th Street, New York, New York 10022) or through Davidyurman.com.

Dior Men

This matte-finish, white lily iteration from Dior was made in collaboration with American artist Daniel Arsham. Available at Dior boutiques or through Dior.com, the pin retails for $890.

Bulgari

Yellow gold infused with onyx inserts, square-cut rubies totaling nearly 6 carats, and two brilliant-cut diamonds configure Bulgari’s High Jewelry clip. The piece is available for approximately $130,000 by calling 1.800.BVLGARI.

Of Rare Origin

Romance is not dead–and Of Rare Origin is making sure of it! Hand-carved in Italy, this lapel pin features a delicately sculpted hand clutching a rose with golden leaves, meant to rest over the heart. For $250, it’s available here.

Van Cleef & Arpels

An endless source of inspiration for Van Cleef & Arpels, butterflies are often associated with femininity. But this "Belle-Dame Butterfly" clip offers a more neutral, diamond and white-gold option for the modern gentleman—all while maintaining a whimsical air. It’s available for $253,000 at Van Cleef & Arpels or through Vancleefarpels.com.
