The Trend Report: Hot Seat

The Swan Chair

In 1958 Dane Arne Jacobsen was in the middle of a five-year project: designing Copenhagen’s Royal Hotel—both exteriors and interiors—from the ground up. To play against the building’s straight lines and right angles, he created some decidedly curvaceous furniture, including the now-iconic Swan chair, which sat invitingly in the lobby once the property opened in 1960. The Swan, which has remained in production, turns 50 this year. To celebrate, furnituremaker Fritz Hansen has released 1,958 all-white Swans. With its milky leather seat and pearlescent swivel base (normally left metallic gray), this version embodies all the grace and serenity of its namesake. $10,640; 212-421-3300;
