Halotherapy is sweeping the wellness world. Never heard of it? Perhaps you know it best by its other name: Salt therapy.

According to the Salt Therapy Association (yes, there is such a thing), the treatment first began in the salt caves in Eastern Europe. It became recognized for its benefits from the salt miners themselves, who spent day after day chiseling away at the mineral. However, unlike other miners, these workers rarely came down with respiratory issues and continued to look youthful long into old age.

In 1839, Dr. Feliks Boczkowski founded the first health resort facility at the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland. At the time, he offered clients salt baths to help treat asthma. Though the treatment was popular from the start, it didn’t go mainstream until 1985 when researchers at the Institute of Balneology in Odessa, Russia, created the first Halotherapy device that could disperse salt particles into the air. That invention meant halotherapy spas could open up just about anywhere. With that in mind, here are seven spas around the United States harness the power of salt so you can experience all its benefits too.

The Spa at Aria: Las Vegas

The 80,000-square-foot Spa at Aria is not only home to some seriously over-the-top treatments, but it also has a Shio Sal Room. There, guests are invited to come, lay back, and relax in a comfortable lounge chair and breathe in all the therapeutic air. The room's walls are constructed by exquisitely illuminated yellow and red salt bricks, giving off a warm and inviting hue. Guests will get to deepen their experience thanks to vibration therapy and radiant music. And that will leave them totally refreshed for a night out on the Vegas strip.

Chaminade Resort & Spa: La Jolla, California

The 1,700-square-foot spa at the Chaminade Resort & Spa recently introduced not one, but two, Himalayan Salt Saunas to its offerings. Users of the Salt Saunas will get all the benefits of both the salt for respiratory health and the sauna’s heat for cleansing the body of toxins, reducing inflammation and soothing sore muscles. “We are excited to be introducing our guests and members to the healing, holistic, and therapeutic properties of Himalayan Salt,” General Manager Kevin Herbst, shared in a statement on the spa’s website. “Our spa already excels in providing guests a relaxing environment, the Himalayan Salt Saunas will only add to the overall experience.”

The Salt Caves of Santa Barbara: Santa Barbara, California

Just as the name implies this place is all about the salt. Inside The Salt Caves of Santa Barbara visitors can find a plethora of salt-related options, included massages, facials, and scrubs all containing magnificent pink Himalayan Sea Salt. Guests may also take part in yoga, sound baths, meditation, and more. And it gets better, not only is the room made of salt, but the floor also comes covered in crushed Himalayan Salt.

Breathe Salt Room: New York City

Those living, working, or visiting New York City can easily escape all the hustle and bustle of hectic life with a quick session in one of Breathe’s Salt Rooms. Inside, the spa takes advantage of the latest halotherapy technology, including state-of-the-art Halogenerator that can tailor the salt particle concentration, size, and speed of spray depending on a specific visitor’s needs. Guests are welcome to book 20-45 minute sessions. They're also welcome to join in on weekly yoga and meditation classes in the lovely pink rooms.

The Salt Grotto: Brandon, Florida

The Salt Grotto in Brandon, Florida takes your relaxation and your respiratory health seriously. Inside the spa, guests are welcome to lay completely enveloped in salt in the spa’s salt chamber bed. Inside the bed, guests have the option to lie directly in heated Himalayan Salt Crystals or lie on our elevated wooden platform and remain above the salt. Each bed comes with an adjustable halogenerator to individualize the therapy and can be enjoyed in 10-15 minute sessions.

Asheville Salt Cave: Asheville, North Carolina

The Asheville Salt Caves invite guests to come for a spell inside one of their rooms, but why not up the ante on wellness by booking a massage inside a salt room as well? At the spa, located in Asheville, North Carolina, guests can choose from traditional massages, hot stone work, pressure point massage, and aromatherapy salt glow. This way, guests will not only get all the benefits of the salt for their lungs, but their bodies will feel fantastic, too.

Salt Mine Arium: Seattle

Like the other spas listed above, the Salt Mine Arium also offers regular classes, massages, and energy work, but it takes it a step further by allowing guests to rent out an entire salt room. This means your bridal shower, girl’s night out, or even your wedding ceremony can take place amongst the healing power of salt. And really, is there any better way to start off a perfect union than with a breath of truly fresh air?
