My relationship with sunscreen is akin to my stance on vitamins: I know it’s good for me, but it’s just so unappealing. Despite all the warnings that a life sans SPF ensures aging with a leathery patina, not to mention an increased risk of skin cancer, I opt for blissful ignorance. While that may make me sound like a flippant loaf, consider the average sunscreen’s traits: gummy and greasy, chalky and clogging, sticky, smelly, or worse. Who wants to make that part of their skincare regime? Every summer I make an effort to embrace sun protection (which I realize is problematic, since UV rays are a year-round presence) but I’ve yet to find a solution that sticks past Labor Day.
That is until a few weeks ago, when a tube of La Prairie’s new Cellular Swiss UV Protection Veil landed on my desk. The SPF 50 formula boasts protection against both UVA and UVB rays, as well as airborne pollutants—an encouraging claim, as anyone who rides the New York City subway could probably use a little extra defense.
I like to think of myself as a skincare minimalist: cleanse, moisturize, and get out the door, so I gravitate towards multitasking products that streamline my daily toilette. Protection Veil includes hyaluronic acid and liposome-encapsulated glacial water to provide long lasting moisture—enough that I didn’t need to use any additional products. The lightweight cream also features pore-minimizing lysophosphatidic acid and La Prairie’s Smart Crystal White, a proprietary herbal complex that reduces melanin production; which means clearer, more even-toned skin. And, of course, a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide offer a first line of defense against sun damage while antioxidants fight free radicals.
After a few days of use I noticed it imparted a healthful glow—ironically, the kind I’d usually expect from a weekend at the beach. The easily absorbed cream didn’t melt off by the time I finished my daily commute, nor leave me with a trace of pasty ghost-face or an oil slick by midday.
And, most importantly, on a recent trip to Asbury Park I was able to lay out all day without getting greasy, or feeling guilty. And that alone has earned Protection Veil a year-round spot on my bathroom shelf.
