While some people may say that award show fashion is all about what the ladies are wearing, we beg to differ. Sure, we love looking at all those gorgeous couture gowns that the actresses sport on the red carpet but when it comes to functional apparel that us, ordinary folk, can also wear (and re-wear), it’s all about the guys.
So at tonight’s Golden Globes, we paid special attention to what Hollywood’s leading men showed up in. While some celebrities choose a classic two-piece suit for the big night, others went in a different (and more formal) direction—velvet. From Tom Hanks to Bill Hader, male stars looked so dapper styled in velvet evening jackets.
TV host Ryan Seacrest, for example, opted for one in a deep green hue that he paired with classic black trousers and a white shirt. America’s favorite actor Tom Hanks chose a black and white ensemble that included a single button velvet jacket with satin lapels and matching cuffs. In this case, the soft texture of the velvet gave another dimension to the classic black and white look.
We are also incredibly fond of Tony Shalhoub’s double-breasted navy blue velvet jacket—it looked incredibly fresh in combination with his white bow tie and white shirt.
But if you are looking for more proof that you, too, should invest in a velvet jacket then look no further than Ansel Elgort. The actor stepped out wearing an all-velvet suit and matching loafers in navy and looked absolutely dashing. His most notable accessory? A butterfly brooch on the left lapel. Well played, Ansel.
And finally, just like 12-year-old actor Roman Griffin Davis, we’re giving the velvet jacket trend thumbs-up:
