Tod's Devotees Can Now Design Their Own Perfect Shoe

The Italian brand’s iconic driving shoe gets personal.

Released in 1978 by founder Diego Della Valle as a companion to the latest Fiat convertible, Tod’s "Gommino" shoe has since become a wardrobe staple.

The driving shoe became iconic for its exceptional artisan-quality nuances, such as the brand’s signature "Double T" hardware. Because of its Italian-crafted design and aesthetic, the 133-pebbled driving moccasin has become an understated status symbol that can be worn anywhere—from outings in the park to members’ club events—and with anything, from chinos to suits.

Now, the Italian brand has revamped the traditional style with its latest project, My Gommino, offering full customization. The step-by-step, visual process addresses every detail of the shoe—from the color of the stitching, to type of leather, and even the pebbles—for a totally unique result. The program takes personalization to the next level with optional features such as monogrammed initials.

Once the design process is complete, the details are sent to the company’s Italian workshop, where each pair is hand cut, sewn, and fashioned by local artisans. The whole production takes over 180 steps and 35 pieces of leather for a single pair of moccasins.

Prices for the unisex shoes (as already seen on personalities such as Alexander Skarsgard, Jennifer Garner, and Olivia Culpo) start at $510 and reach $6,500 for more exotic iterations (such as crocodile, elk, alligator, or python). The service is available online and in boutiques around the globe, from Milan to Shanghai, as well as New York City’s Madison Avenue.
