Joan Rivers was many things. She was the first female host of a late night network television talk show. A nothing’s-off-limits comedian. An author. A shrewd businesswoman. And, perhaps more than anything, Rivers, who died in 2014 at age 81, was someone who lived large—a trait that comes through this month at Christie’s. Their new auction, The Private Collection of Joan Rivers, showcases her fabulous array of, well, exquisite stuff. The labels are not surprising (Fabergé, Harry Winston, Tiffany, Chanel) but the way they incorporated into Rivers’ life is. (Her beloved dog lapped from a Tiffany bowl.) Here, Candy Pratts Price chooses her favorite pieces from the auction, which goes live this week as part of an online auction of 80 items, which also includes couture and costumes—the latter by Bob Mackie. On June 22 there will be a live auction featuring 200 lots, which will include furniture, decorative arts, and paintings, some of which are expected to fetch $200,000.
