The word “Noir” conjures a shadowy figure and brings to mind echoing footsteps, a soft touch, a sudden downpour. It is not only a color but a sensibility; an experience. That’s the idea, anyway, says Bergdorf Goodman’s Senior Vice President and Women’s Fashion Director, Linda Fargo. “Black is more than a color, it the ultimate signal of style—strong, seductive mysterious and timeless.”

And now, of course, it’s time to shop the whole notion. On September 6th the iconic store known to locals as simply Bergdorfs will unveil a curated space on the second floor of their Fifth Avenue location devoted to the color black and all of its aforementioned associations. This means a collection of ready-to-wear, accessories, decorative objects, edibles, art, and beauty—assembled for discovery and surprise.

The shop will work on most of our five senses with specialty cocktails, playlists, and events, to bring the objects to life: an intimacy you can only experience through visiting the store. Fargo has also worked closely with Kilian Hennessy to create a signature scent for the space called Do It For Love. The fragrance celebrates the balance between the bold and mysterious with citrus, floral, and woody notes.

Fargo is known for raising expectation in the retail space and this is no exception. The new experiment will offer up products in a manner that favors a subtle reveal over anything too obvious. The lineup will include pieces from little-known brands such as Kiki de Montparnasse, Artel, Olivier Renoux alongside bigger brands such as Gucci, Alexandre Vauthier and Valentino.

Wearing a heavy dose of New York black is not required to shop, but why not?
