This past week, fine jeweler and watchmaker Harry Winston has launched the first-ever products to directly benefit Countdown to a Cure, amfAR’s initiative to eradicate AIDS through the development of a cure for HIV by 2020. While we applaud the fact that 20 percent of retail sales will go directly to supporting cure-focused HIV/AIDS research, there’s much more to admire in the two designs the brand has created for the cause. Released as part of the “Midnight Collection,” both the men’s and women’s models exude the sleek, classic luxury for which Harry Winston is known. The men’s 42mm timepiece ($21,200) features a white gold case, blue alligator leather strap, and deep blue sunburst dial ringed in a gradient of color that represents the fading of AIDS from crisis to cure. The 32mm white gold women’s model ($16, 200) echoes the same color scheme in a glittering display of brilliant-cut diamonds and gemstones, including pink, blue, and yellow sapphires, garnets, and rubies. Only 20 of each limited-edition design were made.
It’s luxury with a story—and one that you can feel good about sharing. “The AIDS epidemic continues to take lives with every passing minute,” says Kevin Robert Frost, CEO of amfAR. The timepieces are “a fitting symbol of the urgency with which we’re pursuing our goal of a cure for HIV.”
